認められている emphasizes recognition of a fact or truth, while 受け入れられている emphasizes acceptance by people, often with a nuance of embracing or adopting. For scientific theories, both are common, but 認められている is slightly more formal.

Do not directly translate 'be generally accepted' as 一般的に受け入れられる (potential form) unless you mean 'can be accepted'. The stative 受け入れられている is correct for describing a current state of acceptance.
