Literary or poetic term for someone who has passed away or an old acquaintance. Not used in everyday conversation; modern Japanese prefers 故人 (こじん) for 'the deceased' and 旧友 (きゅうゆう) for 'old friend'.
旧人を偲ぶ会が開かれた。
A gathering was held to remember the deceased.
彼は旧人との再会を喜んだ。
He was happy to be reunited with his old friend.
