noun
village elder
Archaic or literary term for a respected older man in a village community. Not used in everyday modern Japanese; 村長 (そんちょう) or 長老 (ちょうろう) are more common.
古文書には、村の父老が集まって相談したと記されている。
Ancient documents record that the village elders gathered to consult.
Compound of 父 (father, elderly man) and 老 (old person). The exact historical derivation is uncertain; it appears in classical Chinese texts and was adopted into literary Japanese.
