Compound of 父 (fu, 'father') and 音 (on, 'sound'), modeled after the traditional Chinese phonological term 父音 (fùyīn). The reading ふいん reflects the older go-on reading of 父, while ふおん uses the kan-on reading. The term is now largely replaced by 子音 (しいん).
