Used at the end of a sentence to express that the speaker is both endorsing the preceding statement and questioning it, often seeking agreement or confirmation. Common in casual speech.

  Is that so? (I'm both surprised and seeking confirmation.)

  Are you really okay? (I'm concerned and want to be sure.)

Expresses a lamenting or reflective tone about the preceding statement, often with a sense of regret or wistfulness. The speaker is questioning the situation while also expressing sorrow.

• どうしてこんなことになったのか。

  Why did things turn out like this? (with a sense of regret)

• あの時とき、もっと頑がん張ばればよかったのか。

  Should I have tried harder back then? (reflecting with regret)
