みたいだSeems/looks like

みたいだ presents a conversational, tentative conclusion based on signs, behavior, or the surrounding situation. It lets the speaker say that something seems true without asserting it outright.

Drawing a conclusion from clues

The speaker notices some evidence and makes a reasonable but uncertain conclusion. The clue may be something seen or heard, someone’s behavior, or a fact about the situation; it does not have to be a purely visual impression.

Conclusions in conversation

Each example gives a clue before the conclusion, making clear why the speaker is using a tentative form.

Softening what you say

みたいだ is also useful when you have a likely interpretation but do not want to sound completely certain. In English, the natural translation may be “seems,” “looks like,” or “apparently,” depending on the clue.

Inference or resemblance?

The inferential use estimates whether something is actually true. The same form can instead compare one thing to another, meaning “like” or “resembling.” Context is especially important after a noun. The example below is comparison, not an inference.

あのくもさかなみたいだ

That cloud looks like a fish.

Analyze

The cloud is being compared with a fish; the speaker is not concluding that it actually is one.
