Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 28, 2026
Kotomora is a Japanese learner dictionary. This policy explains what information is processed when you use the Kotomora website, iOS app, or Android app.
Information you submit
When you search, open dictionary entries, or analyze Japanese text, the text, URL, or entry identifier you submit is sent to Kotomora servers so the service can return search results, word entries, kanji entries, guide pages, and sentence analysis.
Analyzer and search requests may appear in URLs or API requests. Avoid submitting private or sensitive text that you do not want processed by Kotomora servers.
Information stored locally
Kotomora does not require an account. Saved entries, recent entries, recent searches, cached dictionary content, and cached analyzer results in the iOS and Android apps are stored on your device. Similar recent activity and preferences on the website are stored in your browser.
Handwriting recognition runs locally in the app or browser. Strokes are used to suggest characters on your device; the selected character or lookup is sent only if you search or open a result.
You can delete saved or recent items in the app where those controls are available. You can also remove local data by uninstalling the app or clearing website data in your browser.
Service and diagnostic data
Like most online services, Kotomora and its hosting providers process technical information such as IP address, request path, query string, timestamps, browser or app information, device information, network status, and error logs. This data is used to operate, secure, debug, and improve the service.
Analytics
Kotomora uses first-party analytics to understand how the product is used and where it needs improvement. Analytics events may include anonymous app or browser identifiers, session identifiers, page type, search result counts, selected result type, app version, coarse device class, referrer or campaign parameters, and similar diagnostic details.
Search analytics may include search text after server-side redaction for things like email addresses, URLs, and long numbers. Analyzer analytics are designed not to store the raw sentence text; they use metrics such as text length and result status instead.
The iOS and Android apps do not include third-party advertising or analytics SDKs. The website may use Plausible Analytics and Google advertising measurement scripts to understand aggregate usage and the effectiveness of promotional campaigns.
Mobile app permissions
The mobile apps use network access to connect to Kotomora servers. The Android app may also check network state so it can handle offline or stale cached content gracefully.
Kotomora does not request access to your precise location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone, phone number, SMS messages, or advertising identifier.
Sharing
If you share text or a link into Kotomora, the app may open the link or analyze the shared text. If you use a system share sheet from Kotomora, the selected destination app or service receives the Kotomora link you choose to share. Kotomora does not control how that third-party service handles shared content.
Service providers
Kotomora uses service providers to host and operate the website, API, database, logging, analytics, app distribution, and advertising measurement. These providers may process data only as needed to provide their services to Kotomora or comply with their legal obligations.
Kotomora does not sell personal information. The mobile apps do not show third-party ads and do not use third-party SDKs to track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Retention and deletion
Local saved entries, recent activity, preferences, and caches remain on your device or browser until you delete them, clear browser data, or uninstall the app. Server-side analytics and operational logs are retained only as long as reasonably needed to operate, secure, debug, and improve Kotomora.
Because Kotomora does not require accounts, some server-side records may not be identifiable to a particular person. You can email privacy@kotomora.com to ask questions or request deletion of information that Kotomora can reasonably identify.
Children
Kotomora is a general-audience language learning tool and is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to Kotomora, contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.
