ているところだIn the middle of doing
This construction focuses closely on a dynamic action at the moment it is underway. It often means “be right in the middle of doing” or, more naturally in a status report, “be doing now.”

ところ focuses attention on a particular phase of an action. With the ongoing form before it, the listener is placed inside the action while it is unfolding. 今 and ちょうど often reinforce this narrow focus, but neither is required.
A current status report
今、会議の資料を確認しているところです。
I’m checking the meeting materials right now.

Looking back at an interrupted action
電話をもらったとき、ちょうど申込書を書いていたところです。
When you called, I was right in the middle of filling out the application form.

The verb form before ところ determines the phase. With the same verb, 書くところだ means someone is about to write, 書いているところだ means someone is in the middle of writing, and 書いたところだ means someone has just written it.
Compared with the general ongoing form
The general ongoing form can simply describe a current activity. Adding ところだ deliberately zooms in on what is happening at the relevant moment, so it is especially useful when answering what someone is doing right now.
弟は大学で経済を勉強している。
My younger brother studies economics at university.
AnalyzeThis describes his broader current activity and does not necessarily mean that he is studying at this exact moment.
弟は今、部屋で試験勉強をしているところだ。
My younger brother is in his room studying for an exam right now.
AnalyzeThis places him inside the activity at the present moment.
