Casual have to / must

なくちゃ and なきゃ casually say that an action has to be done. In conversation, the ending meaning “that will not do” is often left unspoken because the obligation is already clear.

How the forms work

なくちゃ is a spoken shortening of なくては, while なきゃ shortens なければ. Both originally introduce the idea that if the action is not done, the result will not be acceptable. That predictable negative result can be stated explicitly or simply understood.

Stated and omitted endings

The short form can stand alone when the situation makes the obligation clear, or it can be followed by an explicit ending.

It’s already late. I have to go home.

Analyze

Literally: It’s already late. If I don’t go home...

You have to take this medicine every day.

Analyze

Here the negative evaluation is stated explicitly, so the sentence gives the complete casual obligation expression.

Do I have to finish the homework today?

Analyze

A natural self-reminder

A

Are you leaving already?

Analyze
B

Yeah. I have to get to the office by nine.

Analyze

The speaker does not need to finish the expression: the deadline makes the consequence of not going obvious.

Do not confuse these nearby forms

なくちゃ and なきゃ are contracted versions of full obligation patterns. The separate spoken pattern ending in ないと also commonly expresses obligation, but it is formed differently. Most importantly, なくてもいい means that doing something is not necessary—the opposite of the meaning taught here.
