The Renaissance is a historical period in Europe, but the word is also used metaphorically for a revival or rebirth of culture, art, or learning. In Japanese, the historical period is referred to with a specific term, while the metaphorical sense uses different expressions.
Referring to the European Renaissance (14th–17th centuries)
The standard term for the historical Renaissance. It is a loanword from French and is widely understood.
The Renaissance began in Italy.
A more formal, kanji-based term meaning 'revival of literature and arts'. It is less common in everyday speech but appears in academic or historical contexts.
Describing a revival or rebirth of something, like culture, art, or a field
Means 'revival' or 'reconstruction'. It can be used for cultural or artistic rebirth, but is also common for post-disaster recovery.
A cultural renaissance is underway in this city.
Means 'rebirth' or 'regeneration'. Often used for personal or spiritual renewal, or the revival of an area or organization.
Use ルネサンス when specifically referring to the historical European Renaissance. For a general revival or rebirth, 復興 or 再生 is more natural. 文芸復興 is a direct translation but sounds academic and is rarely used in conversation.
Do not translate 'Renaissance' directly as 再生 or 復興 when referring to the historical period. It will sound like you are talking about a generic revival rather than the specific era.
