Translation guide
The English word "appendix" has two main meanings: a section at the end of a book or document, and a small organ in the body. These are expressed with different Japanese words.
Referring to an appendix in a book, report, or document.
The most common word for an appendix or supplement in a book or magazine. It can also refer to freebies or extras included with a publication.
Referring to the vermiform appendix, a small tube attached to the large intestine.
付録 is the general term for an appendix or supplement in a book, often containing extra information, tables, or even physical items like maps. 補遺 is specifically a supplement that adds missing or updated content, more common in academic or reference works.
The English word 'appendix' covers both a book section and a body part, but Japanese uses completely different words. Using 付録 for the organ or 虫垂 for a book section would cause confusion.
Please see the appendix at the end of the volume for details.
