Translation guide
This English phrase has two main uses: physical proximity (something is close enough to grab) and attainability (a goal or object is achievable). Japanese expresses these ideas with different words and patterns.
目標は手が届くところだ。
The goal is within reach.
Something is close enough to be touched or grabbed.
Literally 'hand reaches'. This is the most natural way to say something is within arm's reach.
その本は手が届くところにある。
That book is within reach.
More explicit: 'within the range where the hand reaches'. Slightly more formal or descriptive.
リモコンは手の届く範囲に置いてください。
Please keep the remote within reach.
Means 'near at hand' or 'handy'. Often used for objects kept conveniently close.
手近な道具で修理した。
I fixed it with tools that were within reach.
A goal, dream, or desired object is achievable or obtainable.
The same phrase as physical reach, but used metaphorically. Very common for goals becoming attainable.
夢に手が届くまで頑張ります。
I'll work hard until my dream is within reach.
Literally 'within firing range'. Used for goals or targets that are now achievable. Slightly formal or business-like.
優勝が射程圏内に入ってきた。
The championship has come within reach.
Can be used metaphorically for attainability, but less common than 手が届く for abstract goals.
その価格は手の届く範囲だ。
That price is within reach.
Means 'obtainable' or 'available'. Used for objects or information, not goals.
Something is cheap enough to buy.
Commonly used for affordability. Often with price or item as the subject.
この車は私にも手が届く値段だ。
This car is at a price within my reach.
Means 'affordable' or 'reasonable'. Often used as 手頃な価格 (affordable price).
手が届く is a verb phrase meaning 'to be within reach' and is more common in everyday speech. 手の届く範囲 is a noun phrase meaning 'the range within reach' and is slightly more descriptive or formal.
