In Japanese, the most common word for 'blackboard' is 黒板 (こくばん). However, in modern classrooms, green boards are often used, and the term 黒板 may still be used generically. There is also a specific word for whiteboards, ホワイトボード, which is distinct.
The large board at the front of a classroom used for writing with chalk.
The standard word for a blackboard, even if the board is actually green. Used in schools and educational contexts.
先生が黒板に字を書いた。
The teacher wrote characters on the blackboard.
黒板を消してください。
Please erase the blackboard.
Even though many Japanese schools use green chalkboards, they are still referred to as 黒板 (こくばん). The word literally means 'black board', but it has become the generic term for any chalkboard in a classroom setting.
黒板 is for chalk, while ホワイトボード is for markers. If you are in a modern office or language school, you might see ホワイトボード more often. In traditional school settings, 黒板 is the norm.
Specifically a whiteboard, used with markers. Not a blackboard, but often found in modern classrooms and offices. Use this when you need to distinguish from a traditional chalkboard.
