競う (kisou) emphasizes vying in skill or quality, often without a direct prize. 競争する (kyousou suru) is for races or contests with clear winners. 争う (arasou) implies a struggle or conflict, sometimes with negative connotations.
Avoid directly translating 'compete with' as '〜と競争する' in all cases. For friendly rivalry, 競う or 張り合う may be more natural. For business, 競合する is standard.
