I only have a vague memory of his face.
Literally 'thin memory'. Used metaphorically, but less common than おぼろげな記憶. Can sound slightly literary.

That event became a faint memory.
Emphasizing that the memory is almost forgotten, on the verge of disappearing.
消えかける means 'to be on the verge of disappearing'. This phrase vividly conveys a memory that is fading away.

忘れかける means 'to be about to forget'. It highlights the act of forgetting rather than the faintness itself.
忘れかけた記憶がよみがえる。
A memory I had almost forgotten comes back.
