Translation guide
In Japanese, 'good wine' is most naturally expressed as いいワイン or 美味しいワイン. The choice depends on whether you mean good quality or good taste, and the context (casual vs. formal).
Referring to wine that is of high quality, well-made, or prestigious.
The most common and natural way to say 'good wine' in everyday conversation. いい means 'good' in a general sense, covering both quality and taste.
これはいいワインですね。
This is a good wine, isn't it?
Focuses on the taste being delicious. Very common when complimenting the flavor.
美味しいワインをありがとう。
Thank you for the delicious wine.
Means 'high-quality wine'. Slightly more formal, often used in descriptions or reviews.
この店は上質なワインを揃えている。
This shop stocks high-quality wines.
Refers to 'luxury' or 'premium' wine, often implying a high price point.
彼は高級ワインのコレクターだ。
He is a collector of fine wines.
Specifically praising the taste of the wine.
The standard way to say the wine tastes good.
このワイン、本当に美味しいね。
This wine is really delicious, isn't it?
Casual, often used by men. うまい is a more emphatic 'delicious'.
うまいワインだなあ。
This is some good wine!
Describes a rich, mellow, and aromatic wine. Used in formal or connoisseur contexts.
芳醇な赤ワインがおすすめです。
We recommend a rich, mellow red wine.
Recommending a wine as a good choice.
Means 'recommended wine'. Very natural when asking for or giving a suggestion.
おすすめのワインはありますか?
Do you have a good wine you'd recommend?
Also works for recommendations, but おすすめ is more direct for asking.
何かいいワインを知ってる?
Do you know any good wines?
いいワイン is a broader term that can refer to quality, reputation, or taste. 美味しいワイン specifically means the wine tastes good. In many casual situations they are interchangeable, but if you want to emphasize flavor, use 美味しい.
このワイン、いいね。(品質も味も含めて良い)
This wine is good. (including quality and taste)
このワイン、美味しいね。(味が良い)
This wine is delicious. (taste is good)
While 良いワイン is grammatically correct, it sounds slightly stiff. いいワイン is the natural colloquial form. Also, do not use グッドワイン, which is not Japanese.
