Translation guide
In Japanese, the ground floor is called 一階 (いっかい), literally 'first floor'. Unlike some English-speaking countries, Japan uses the same numbering as the US: the ground-level floor is the 1st floor.
Referring to the floor of a building that is level with the ground outside.
Standard term for the ground floor in Japanese buildings. Equivalent to 'first floor' in American English.
受付は一階にあります。
The reception is on the ground floor.
このビルの一階にはカフェがあります。
There is a cafe on the ground floor of this building.
In British English, 'ground floor' is the floor at ground level, and 'first floor' is the one above it. In Japanese (like American English), 一階 (いっかい) is the ground-level floor. Be careful not to confuse this when translating.
その店は一階にあります。
The shop is on the ground floor.
