内輪ネタ is the go-to phrase in casual conversation. You can say 内輪ネタで盛り上がる (get excited over inside jokes) or 内輪ネタが通じる (the inside joke lands). It's widely understood and not overly slangy.

We had a blast reminiscing about inside jokes from high school.
直訳の「内部のジョーク」や「インサイドジョーク」は不自然です。必ず上記の自然な表現を使ってください。
