Translation guide
A medical procedure where fluids, medications, or nutrients are delivered directly into a vein through a tube over a period of time.
Referring to the act of receiving fluids or medication through an IV drip.
The most common and general term for an intravenous drip infusion. Used in both medical and everyday contexts.
Referring to the physical IV bag, tubing, or setup.
Avoid directly translating 'intravenous drip infusion' word-for-word. The natural Japanese term is simply 点滴 (てんてき). Using a long literal translation like 静脈内点滴注入 would sound unnatural and overly technical outside of very specific medical documents.
点滴 is often used with verbs like 打つ (うつ, to administer/hit), 受ける (うける, to receive), or する (to do). For example: 点滴を打つ (to give an IV drip), 点滴を受ける (to receive an IV drip).
彼は入院中、毎日点滴を受けている。
He receives an intravenous drip infusion every day while hospitalized.
脱水症状で点滴を打ってもらった。
I got an IV drip for dehydration.
A more formal medical term, literally 'drip intravenous injection'. Used in clinical settings or medical documents.
点滴静注により抗生物質を投与する。
Administer antibiotics by intravenous drip infusion.
Refers specifically to the infusion of fluids (e.g., saline, nutrients) rather than the procedure itself. Often used in medical contexts.
術後は輸液で水分補給を行う。
After surgery, hydration is provided through intravenous infusion.
Literally 'drip injection'. Less common than 点滴 alone, but may be used to emphasize the injection aspect.
点滴注射の準備をしてください。
Please prepare the intravenous drip injection.
Also used to refer to the IV bag or the entire drip setup. Context distinguishes it from the procedure.
点滴が空になったので交換してください。
The IV bag is empty, so please change it.
点滴のチューブが絡まっている。
The IV tubing is tangled.
Specifically the IV bag. A more explicit term when clarity is needed.
点滴バッグをスタンドに吊るす。
Hang the IV bag on the stand.
