Translation guide
In Japanese, 'local time' is most commonly expressed as 現地時間 (genchi jikan), a straightforward compound meaning 'on-site time.' It is used in travel, scheduling, and international contexts. For casual conversation, 現地の時間 (genchi no jikan) is also natural. In technical or computing contexts, ローカル時間 (rōkaru jikan) appears, but it is less common.
Referring to the current time in a particular place, especially when traveling or coordinating across time zones.
Standard term for 'local time' in most contexts. Used in news, travel, and business.
現地時間で午後3時に到着します。
We will arrive at 3 p.m. local time.
A slightly more conversational way to say 'local time,' literally 'the time of the place.'
現地の時間は今何時ですか?
What time is it there now?
Used mainly in computing or technical settings to distinguish from UTC or server time. Not common in everyday speech.
システムはローカル時間で表示されます。
The system displays in local time.
When the context is clear, Japanese often drops 時間 (jikan). For example, '現地で午後3時' (genchi de gogo san-ji) means '3 p.m. locally.'
