The general sense or essential meaning, often when paraphrasing.
Literally 'what one wants to say'. Very natural in conversation to refer to the main point someone is making.

What is the main idea he's trying to convey?
The outline or general drift. Used when you understand the overall idea but not the details.
話の大筋は理解できた。
I got the main idea of the talk.
主旨 (しゅし) refers to the overall gist or intended meaning, while 要点 (ようてん) refers to the key points or essential facts. Use 主旨 when you want the core message, and 要点 when you want a bullet-point summary.
その記事の主旨は、気候変動が加速しているということです。
The main idea of the article is that climate change is accelerating.
