Translation guide
A single corrective lens worn in one eye, often associated with formal or old-fashioned attire. In Japanese, it is usually referred to by the loanword モノクル, but descriptive phrases are also used.
A single lens for one eye, held in place by the eye socket, used for vision correction or as a fashion accessory.
The standard loanword from English 'monocle'. Widely understood, especially in contexts of historical or formal European fashion.
彼はモノクルを右目にはめていた。
He wore a monocle on his right eye.
Literally 'one-eye glasses'. A native Japanese term that clearly describes the object. Less common than モノクル but easily understood.
Literally 'single-eye scope'. More technical and can also refer to a small telescope or monocular. Used in optical contexts.
In modern Japanese, モノクル is strongly associated with Western historical settings or characters like detectives and aristocrats. For everyday vision correction, 片眼鏡 is rarely used; instead, people would specify 眼鏡 (glasses) or コンタクトレンズ (contact lenses).
その紳士は片眼鏡を外して拭いた。
The gentleman removed his monocle and wiped it.
彼は単眼鏡で遠くの船を見た。
He looked at the distant ship with a monocular.
