Expressing ordinal school periods or class periods in Japanese, such as 'first period', 'second period', etc.
The learner wants to refer to a specific class period by its order in the school day.
The standard way to say 'nth period' in a school context. Replace N with the ordinal number (e.g., 1, 2, 3). The counter 時間 (じかん) means 'period' or 'class hour', and 目 (め) indicates the ordinal.
1時間目は数学です。
First period is math.
3時間目にテストがあります。
There's a test in third period.
The ordinal is formed by adding 目 (め) to the counter. For numbers, use the standard Japanese number readings: いち, に, さん, etc. Note that 4時間目 is よじかんめ, not しじかんめ.
Also means 'nth period', using the counter 限 (げん). Slightly more formal or used in some school systems. Interchangeable with N時間目 in most contexts.
2限目は体育です。
Second period is P.E.
