Describes food that is simple, unseasoned, or without strong flavors. Japanese has several expressions depending on whether you mean 'bland', 'simple/rustic', or 'unadorned'.
To describe food that is not tasty because it lacks seasoning or flavor.
Literally 'flavor is thin'. The most common way to say food is bland or lacks seasoning.
このスープは味が薄い。
This soup is bland.
To describe food that is plain in a positive or neutral way, without fancy ingredients or elaborate preparation.
Simple, rustic, homestyle cooking. Often has a warm, nostalgic feel.
祖母の素朴な料理が一番好きだ。
I like my grandmother's simple home cooking the best.
To describe food that is intentionally plain, without sauces, spices, or toppings.
Without putting anything on it. Common for rice, noodles, etc.
ご飯は何もかけないで食べます。
I eat rice plain (without anything on it).
Do not translate 'plain food' as プレーンフード or 平らな食べ物. These are not natural Japanese.
Lightly seasoned; can be positive (delicate flavor) or negative (bland) depending on context.
薄味の料理が好きです。
I like lightly seasoned food.
Dull, tasteless, unappealing. Stronger negative nuance than 味が薄い.
病院食は味気ない。
Hospital food is plain and unappealing.
Frugal, plain meal. Often implies simplicity by necessity or choice, not necessarily bland.
旅の間は質素な食事で済ませた。
During the trip, we made do with plain meals.
Light, not heavy or greasy. Often used for food that is easy on the stomach.
今日はあっさりした料理が食べたい。
Today I want to eat something light.
As is; without alteration. Can be used for food eaten plain.
パンをそのまま食べる。
I eat bread plain (without butter or jam).
