The English word "prominent" covers several distinct meanings: physically sticking out, being well-known or important, and being visually conspicuous. Japanese uses different words for each nuance.

The most common way to say something is physically protruding. Used for body parts, architectural features, etc.

Often used for things that overhang or jut out, like balconies or cliffs.
I was standing on a prominent rock.
Used for geological or anatomical protrusions, like a prominent ridge or bone. More technical.
The mountain has a prominent ridge.
Describing a person or thing that is widely known and respected in a particular field.
The standard word for 'prominent' in the sense of famous or well-known. Used for people, works, etc.

More general 'famous'. Slightly less formal than 著名な, but very common.

Means 'outstanding' or 'preeminent'. Stronger than 著名な, implying exceptional prominence.
He is a prominent politician.
Describing something that stands out visually or in a situation, often because of its position, color, or size.
The most common verb for 'stand out' or 'be conspicuous'. Can be used for anything that catches the eye.

More formal, often used for abstract things like differences, features, or trends that are prominent.
A prominent difference can be seen.
Means 'striking' or 'marked'. Emphasizes that something stands out sharply from its surroundings.
She has a prominent talent.
Both mean 'famous', but 著名な is more formal and often implies distinction in a specific field, while 有名な is general 'well-known' and can be used for anything from celebrities to local landmarks.
The loanword プロミネント exists but is rarely used outside of very specific contexts (e.g., astronomy 'solar prominence'). It does not mean 'prominent' in the general sense.
