Translation guide
The chess piece, not the bird. In Japanese chess (shogi), the equivalent piece is the hisha (flying chariot). For the bird, see 'crow' or 'raven'.
The rook in Western chess
Standard term for the rook in Western chess. Loanword from English.
ルークを動かして、相手のキングをチェックした。
I moved my rook and checked the opponent's king.
The shogi piece equivalent to the rook. Sometimes used when discussing shogi or comparing games.
将棋では、飛車はとても強い駒です。
In shogi, the rook is a very powerful piece.
The English word 'rook' can also mean a type of crow. In Japanese, that bird is called ミヤマガラス (miyamagarasu) or simply カラス (karasu). If you're talking about the bird, use those terms instead.
