Translation guide
A casual interjection used in English to show you are listening, agree, or say yes. In Japanese, the equivalent is usually a backchannel response (aizuchi) or a casual agreement word, not a direct translation.
The speaker wants to signal 'I'm listening, continue' during a conversation.
The most common casual backchannel. Used repeatedly in conversation to show you are paying attention. Can be drawn out (うーん) but that may sound like hesitation.
"I watched a movie yesterday." "Uh-huh."
A doubled version, often with a nod, showing stronger engagement or agreement while listening.
「それでね、すごく大変だったんだ。」「うんうん。」
"And then, it was really tough." "Uh-huh, uh-huh."
Polite backchannel. Used in formal situations or with superiors. Not as casual as 'uh-huh' but serves the same function.
「会議は三時からです。」「はい。」
"The meeting is from 3 o'clock." "Uh-huh."
A softer, slightly more feminine or polite backchannel. Less common than うん or はい.
「そうなんですか。」「ええ。」
"Is that so?" "Uh-huh."
The speaker wants to affirm something in a relaxed way, similar to 'yeah' or 'yep'.
The default casual 'yes'. Use with friends, family, or close colleagues.
「これ、食べる?」「うん。」
"You gonna eat this?" "Uh-huh."
Means 'that's right' or 'yeah'. Can be used alone as a casual agreement.
「明日休みだよね?」「そう。」
"Tomorrow's a day off, right?" "Uh-huh."
A more masculine, gruff 'yeah'. Common among men.
「もう行くの?」「ああ。」
"You're leaving already?" "Uh-huh."
The speaker uses 'uh-huh' to express doubt or sarcasm, like 'sure, I don't believe you'.
A drawn-out sound indicating mild disbelief or lack of interest. Can be sarcastic depending on tone.
「私、宇宙人に会ったんだ。」「ふーん。」
"I met an alien." "Uh-huh."
Expresses mild surprise or skepticism. Tone determines if it's genuine or sarcastic.
「宝くじが当たったんだ。」「へえ。」
"I won the lottery." "Uh-huh."
English 'uh-huh' is a specific sound; Japanese uses different sounds (うん, はい, etc.) depending on context and politeness. Using 'アハ' or 'ウフ' will not be understood.
In face-to-face conversation, a simple nod can replace verbal backchannels. Japanese speakers often nod while saying うん or はい.
