Translation guide
The act of taking power, a position, or rights by force or without legal right. In Japanese, this concept is expressed through specific verbs and nouns depending on what is being seized (throne, authority, role, etc.).
To take control of a government, kingdom, or leadership position by force or without legitimate claim.
The most direct equivalent for usurpation of a throne or political power. Often used in historical or formal contexts.
彼は王位を簒奪した。
He usurped the throne.
簒奪者はすぐに倒された。
The usurper was quickly overthrown.
Literally 'to seize power'. A more general phrase for taking power by force, not necessarily limited to thrones.
軍部が権力を奪取した。
The military seized power.
Often used for hostile takeovers (e.g., of a company or system), but can metaphorically apply to power. Less formal than 簒奪.
そのクーデターは政府の乗っ取りだった。
The coup was a takeover of the government.
To wrongfully take over a position, function, or rights that belong to someone else, often in a non-political context.
To take away someone's authority or rights. Commonly used in workplace or legal contexts.
上司の権限を奪うような行為は許されない。
Actions that usurp the boss's authority are not tolerated.
To take over someone's role or function, often implying unfairness.
彼は私の役割を奪った。
He usurped my role.
To snatch or intercept something meant for someone else (e.g., credit, opportunity). Can imply usurpation in a petty sense.
To seize land, assets, or a title that rightfully belongs to another, often through legal manipulation or force.
To seize unjustly. A formal phrase suitable for legal or historical descriptions of property usurpation.
彼は遺産を不当に奪取した。
He usurped the inheritance unjustly.
To hijack or take over (e.g., an account, a company). Common in modern contexts like cyber usurpation.
彼らは会社を乗っ取った。
They usurped the company.
簒奪 (さんだつ) is specifically for thrones or sovereign power and carries a historical, dramatic tone. 奪取 (だっしゅ) is a general term for seizing something by force, often used with 権力 (power). 乗っ取り (のっとり) is more colloquial and often used for corporate takeovers or hijacking.
王位簒奪は重罪とされた。
Usurpation of the throne was considered a serious crime.
武力による政権奪取。
Seizure of political power by force.
企業乗っ取りを防ぐ。
Prevent a corporate takeover.
There is no single Japanese word that covers all nuances of 'usurpation'. Using 簒奪 for minor role-taking sounds overly dramatic. Choose the phrase based on what is being taken.
彼は私の席を奪った。
He took my seat (not 'usurped' in the dramatic sense).
彼が私のアイデアを横取りした。
He usurped my idea (took credit for it).
