I dare say; though, honestly
Archaic sentence-ending particle. In positive sentences, it adds a nuance of 'I dare say' or 'I think'. In negative sentences, it softens the statement, similar to 'though' or 'honestly'. Found in classical or highly literary Japanese.
昔の人は「そうではあるまいがね」などと言った。
People in the old days would say things like 'That's probably not the case, I dare say.'
古典では「知らぬがね」のように使われる。
In classical texts, it is used like 'I don't know, honestly.'
