Expresses a speaker's conjecture that something is not the case or will not happen. Often used to soften a negative assertion or to express doubt. The しない form is the most common pattern, but ない can be used with other verbs.

• 彼かれは来こないのではないかと思おもう。

  I think he probably won't come.

• この計けい画かくはうまくいかないのではないか。

  I suspect this plan might not go well.
