Used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a reason or explanation for a previously mentioned situation. Often followed by からだ or のだ.

• 彼かれは遅ち刻こくした。それというのも、電でん車しゃが遅おくれたからだ。

  He was late. The reason is that the train was delayed.

• 会かい議ぎは中ちゅう止しになった。それというのも、部ぶ長ちょうが急きゅう病びょうになったのだ。

  The meeting was canceled. It is because the department head suddenly fell ill.
