A similar festival in Hirosaki and other parts of Aomori, often with smaller, more fan-shaped floats. The name and float style differ regionally.
The name ねぶた is said to derive from 眠り流し (ねむりながし), a purification ritual to send away drowsiness and misfortune before the harvest.
