Technical term in Japanese historical phonology referring to the long /oː/ vowel that resulted from the fusion of /o/ + /u/ or /e/ + /u/ sequences, e.g. in 王 (わう → おう) or 今日 (けふ → きょう).

• 「王おう」の歴れき史し的てき仮か名な遣づかいは「わう」だが、合ごう音おんによって「おう」と読よまれるようになった。

  The historical kana spelling of 王 is わう, but through vowel fusion it came to be read as おう.
