Lowest of the top three civil positions (三公) of the Zhou dynasty in ancient China. A historical title with no modern usage.

The Japanese title 右大臣 is the direct equivalent of 太保 in the Nara/Heian context, but 太保 is the Chinese-derived term used in historical texts.
From Chinese 太保 (tàibǎo), a title in the Zhou dynasty. The Japanese reading たいほう is the on'yomi. The variant たいほ is a contraction. The second sense is a Japanese adaptation of the Chinese title to a similar high office.
