also: あきしょ
noun
empty place; unoccupied space
Archaic term for a vacant or empty area. In modern Japanese, 空き地 (あきち) or 空き場所 (あきばしょ) are more common.
古い文献には「明所」を「あきど」と読ませ、何もない場所を指す例が見られる。
In old texts, 明所 is read as あきど and refers to an empty place.
The historical derivation is uncertain; the kanji 明 (bright/clear) and 空 (empty) are conventionally associated with the meaning of an unoccupied space.
