くもなんともないでもなんでもないStrong complete negation

These patterns strongly reject a quality, feeling, state, or label: not merely “not X,” but “not X at all” or “nothing of the sort.” They often respond to someone’s assumption and can sound reassuring, defensive, or dismissive.

More than an ordinary negative

An ordinary negative simply says that a description does not apply. This pattern goes further: the speaker rejects the description completely, often because someone has suggested or assumed it. It is particularly common with emotions, physical sensations, evaluations, desires, illness, status, and social labels.

だいじょう。このちゅうしゃいたくもなんともないよ。

It’s okay. This shot doesn’t hurt at all.

Analyze

Here the strong denial is reassuring rather than argumentative.

Rejecting an assumption

A

ほんとうかれうらやましくないの?

Are you really not jealous of him?

Analyze
B

うん、うらやましくもなんともないよ。

Right. I’m not jealous of him in the slightest.

Analyze

Because the question presents jealousy as a likely possibility, the answer sounds like a firm rejection of that interpretation.

Desires and classifications

With a desire form, the speaker denies feeling any desire at all. With a noun or na-adjective, the speaker rejects a proposed classification or description.

いまあまものべたくもなんともない

Right now, I have absolutely no desire to eat anything sweet.

Analyze

あのうわさじつでもなんでもない

That rumor is not a fact or anything of the sort.

Analyze

あれはしんせつでもなんでもないあいはいしたいだけだ。

That wasn’t kindness at all—just a desire to control the other person.

Analyze

This use is openly critical: it rejects someone’s behavior being described as kind.
