にしてAt a noteworthy point
にして highlights the particular time, age, attempt, or stage at which an important result or change occurs. The point may feel surprisingly early, unusually late, hard-won, or decisive; the surrounding context supplies that evaluation.
What the construction emphasizes
The following clause normally reports a realization, success, discovery, completion, or major change. The construction does more than locate that result in time: it asks the reader to notice why reaching that particular point matters.
Early, hard-won, and delayed results
Notice that the English wording changes with the expectation created by each context.
At just fifteen, she won an international competition.
AnalyzeThe age is strikingly early for the achievement.
Success in synthesizing the new drug came only on the third attempt.
Analyzeようやく makes the hard-won, delayed reading explicit.

AnalyzeHere the highlighted point feels notably late.
Only at the final stage did the project overcome its greatest technical challenge.
AnalyzeThe stage is presented as a decisive point in development.
Do not memorize one fixed translation
Depending on the expectation, natural English may use “already at,” “at just,” “only at,” or “finally at.” These are contextual translations. The stable meaning is that the stated point is being singled out as noteworthy.
Neutral time versus a marked stage
The meeting began at three, but the negotiations did not reach agreement until ten hours after they began.
AnalyzeThe ordinary 三時に simply gives a start time. 十時間目にして presents the eventual agreement as notably delayed and hard-won.
The same form can have a different job
In this lesson, the noun before にして identifies a noteworthy point at which a result occurs. Another use of the identical form combines two roles or qualities instead; no time or development is involved. Basic time に simply locates an event and does not add this marked evaluation.
He is both a doctor and a writer.
AnalyzeThis is the separate role-combining use: one person has two concurrent roles.
