つ～つAlternating back and forth
つ～つ joins an established pair of opposing or reciprocal verbs to present repeated alternation, back-and-forth movement, or a balanced give-and-take relationship. It is literary and written-leaning, though several familiar fixed expressions are also natural in speech.
How the alternation works
The two verbs normally point in opposite directions, describe alternating visible states, or express reciprocal roles. The pair is understood as a repeated cycle rather than as two isolated actions. Both halves take つ.

彼は廊下を行きつ戻りつ、知らせを待った。
He paced back and forth in the hallway while waiting for news.

Using the pair in a sentence
The paired expression can directly describe how an action unfolds, often followed by the main event. It can also combine with する or appear before a noun with の, as in 抜きつ抜かれつの接戦, meaning a close contest in which the lead keeps changing.
Choosing an alternation pattern
つ～つ packages a recognized opposing or reciprocal pair and often sounds literary. ～ては～ては can productively describe actions that are repeatedly performed in alternation, while たり～たり gives representative actions or states and does not by itself imply a continuous back-and-forth cycle.
