かってToward; facing

かって presents someone or something as moving, facing, speaking, or acting toward a target. It emphasizes the direction or orientation toward that target, not merely the final destination.

The central image

Think of an arrow pointing from the subject toward the noun before かって. The subject is the person or thing moving, facing, or acting; that noun is the target.

Movement, facing, and progress

The same directional image extends naturally from literal movement to speech and figurative progress.

まえざんたいさんちょうかってあるはじめた。

Before dawn, the climbing party began walking toward the summit.

Analyze

しゃたちはだいじんかっていっせいしつもんげかけた。

The reporters all fired questions at the minister at once.

Analyze

The minister is the person toward whom the questions are directed.

チームはゆうしょうというもくひょうかってちゃくじつすすんでいる。

The team is making steady progress toward its goal of winning the championship.

Choose a verb with direction

かって sounds most natural when the following verb can be understood as movement, facing, outward communication, advance, or confrontation. If the sentence only reports arrival at a destination, the basic destination particle is usually enough.

Heading somewhere versus arriving there

Basic destination identifies where someone goes or arrives. かって makes the journey or active heading toward that place visible.

でんしゃりて、まずホテルにった。

After getting off the train, I went to the hotel first.

Analyze

This simply gives the destination.

えきると、かれまよわずホテルにかってあるした。

On leaving the station, he set off toward the hotel without hesitation.

Analyze

Here the sentence focuses on setting out in the hotel's direction.

Movement versus deliberate preparation

かって foregrounds heading, facing, or advancing toward a target. けて more readily foregrounds deliberate preparation or action designed for a future goal. The two can overlap, so choose according to which image matters more.
