This use of で sets the range for a comparison, identifies the people acting together, or introduces a combined total.

AnalyzeThe class is the set within which the comparison is made; it is not the location of an action.
With comparisons, superlatives, evaluations, and choices, the noun before で sets the boundaries of the judgment. English often uses “among,” “in,” or “of,” but the best translation depends on the set.
Acting group
来週、三人で新しい企画を考えます。
Next week, the three of us will work together on a new project idea.
AnalyzeThe number tells you how many people participate in the action together.
This use can follow a number of people or a word naming the group. With 一人で, the natural meaning is “alone” or “by oneself”; with みんなで, it is “all together.”
Combined total
家族は両親と姉と私で、全部で四人です。
My family consists of my parents, my older sister, and me—four people in all.

A number before this marker is not always a group
When a number counts participants, it answers how many people act together. The quantitative-limit use instead answers how much is enough to complete or satisfy something. Check the verb and the surrounding context rather than translating every number-plus-marker phrase in the same way.
この量なら、三人分で足ります。
For this amount, three servings will be enough.
