Action or event location

marks the place where someone performs an action or where an event occurs.

Marking where something happens

Put immediately after the place. The rest of the sentence tells you what action is performed or what event occurs there.

An everyday action

I eat lunch at school.

Analyze

An event

らいしゅうみんかいかんコンサートがあります。

There will be a concert at the civic hall next week.

Analyze

Here, the concert is an event taking place at the hall.

Asking where

A

どこでべんきょうしますか。

Analyze
B

Analyze

Action or event versus existence

きょうしつけんがあります。

There is an exam in the classroom.

Analyze

The exam is an event occurring in the classroom.

きょうしつ時計とけいがあります。

There is a clock in the classroom.

Analyze

The clock is a thing that exists in the classroom, so this is the neighboring existence-location pattern.

Using it with other details

A sentence can also include a subject, object, time, or destination. These details do not change the location marker: if the place is where the action itself happens, use .
