の中でinside; out of, among
After a place, の中で is "inside": where something happens. After a group, it is "out of" or "among": the set you are picking from.
How to form it
Place or group + の中で
- After a place
- The sentence says what is done inside it. Trains and buses count: 電車の中で, "on the train".
- After a group
- The sentence picks from it: which one, who, how many. 一番, a number or だけ usually follows.
In use
I read on the train.
Which of these do you like best?
Of Japan's festivals, I have actually seen only two.
In my family, my father is the only one who doesn't eat spicy food.
With は: in this group, whatever is true of other groups.
Two things to know
の中に or の中で?
There is a key inside the box.
Where something is.
A cat is sleeping inside the box.
Where something is done.
Plain で is often enough
English "in" doesn't call for 中. で alone says where; の中で adds "inside it, not outside".
Children are playing soccer in the park.
Where they are playing.
Children are playing soccer inside the park.
Inside it, not out on the street.
With 一番, a place or a group such as a class can take plain で too: 日本で, クラスで. A kind of thing or a set of items usually takes の中で.

The full way to say "the most": the group, then the winner with が一番.
Among these four people, Ms. Tanaka is the tallest.
中・中N4
With no の in front, 中 is read ちゅう or じゅう: "during", "all through".
