たばかりだHave just done; did only recently
たばかりだ presents a completed event as recent or still fresh from the speaker’s current perspective. The amount of time that has passed is judged in context, so it can mean moments ago or even months ago.
Recency depends on perspective
This pattern does not measure time by a fixed clock or calendar limit. What matters is whether the completed event still feels recent in the situation being discussed. A few seconds is naturally recent, but six months may also feel recent when talking about adjusting to life in a new country.
Different time scales
Both examples present the event as fresh, despite the very different amounts of elapsed time.
今、駅に着いたばかりです。
I have just arrived at the station.
Analyze私は半年前に日本へ来たばかりで、まだ電車の乗り換えに慣れていません。
I came to Japan only six months ago, so I am still not used to changing trains.
AnalyzeSix months is objectively much longer than a moment, but it can still feel recent in the context of settling into another country.

入社したばかりの社員にも、丁寧に仕事を教えてください。
Please carefully show employees who have just joined how to do the work.
AnalyzeWhen a later change feels too soon
この町へ引っ越したばかりだから、また別の町へ移るのは早すぎます。
Having only just moved to this town, moving to another one already would be too soon.
AnalyzeThe pattern highlights why another move feels premature: the first move is still considered recent.
Two important contrasts
たところだ normally reports that something was completed immediately before the reference time. By contrast, たばかりだ gives the speaker’s judgment that the event is still recent, so its time range is more flexible. Also, the same-looking ばかり after a noun or in the pattern with a verb’s て-form expresses restriction or one-sided repetition, not recent completion.
今ちょうど会議が終わったところです。
The meeting has just ended.
AnalyzeHere the completion is presented as immediate: the meeting ended just now.
