から～までFrom ... to ... (range)

から～まで marks the starting and ending boundaries of a time, route, place, or ordered range.

How it works

から follows the starting point, and まで follows the ending point. The two points must form a sensible interval, route, or sequence.

The same pattern works across several kinds of range.

図と書しょ館かんは午ご前ぜん九く時じから午ご後ご六ろく時じまで開あいています。

The library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

このバスは駅えきから空くう港こうまで行いきます。

This bus goes from the station to the airport.

第だい1問もんから第だい5問もんまで答こたえてください。

Please answer questions 1 through 5.

Use から～まで when you are presenting clear endpoints. から～にかけて is better suited to a looser span whose boundaries are approximate.

桜さくら祭まつりは三さん月がつ二十はつ日かから四し月がつ五いつ日かまでです。

The cherry blossom festival runs from March 20 to April 5.

These are the festival's stated start and end dates.

この地ち方ほうでは三さん月がつ下げ旬じゅんから四し月がつ上じょう旬じゅんにかけて桜さくらが咲さきます。

In this region, cherry blossoms bloom from around late March into early April.

The blooming period has gradual, approximate boundaries.
