なにも~ない・だれも~ない・どこにも~ないComprehensive negatives

A question word followed by and a negative ending excludes every possible person, thing, or place: nobody, nothing, or nowhere.

How the pattern works

The question word represents a whole set of possibilities. Adding and making the sentence negative rejects every member of that set. The negative ending is essential.

People, things, and places

だれもまだていません。

No one has arrived yet.

An unspecified person versus no one

A question word with leaves one member unspecified: someone or something. A question word with and a negative ending excludes every member: no one or nothing.
