の?のかQuestions asking for an explanation

These endings ask about the circumstances or reason behind something the speaker has noticed or is already discussing. They do more than simply turn a sentence into a question.

What the question is asking

Use this pattern when there is some situation that calls for an explanation: you see someone packing, notice that a room is unusually quiet, or hear something unexpected. The question asks what lies behind that situation.

The main forms

The surrounding context makes the reason for asking clear.

You're packing your things—are you leaving already?

Analyze

The packed belongings prompt the explanatory question.

Is this problem that difficult? You've been thinking about it for a while.

Analyze

Why is it so quiet today?

Analyze

You have a lot of university textbooks. Are you a student?

Analyze

Not every casual question needs this ending

An ordinary casual question such as 明日あしたる? simply asks whether someone will come tomorrow. By contrast, もつをまとめているけど、もうかえるの? asks about a situation that the speaker has noticed. Adding the explanatory ending to every casual question can sound as though you are always asking for background or justification.

Using the firmer form

のか can be directed at another person, but it often feels firmer than the conversational form. It also works naturally when the speaker is reflecting on a question or when the question is contained inside a longer sentence.

Everyone else is panicking, but you're the only one who is calm. Do you know what's going on?

Analyze

The speaker asks for the background behind the listener's unusual calmness.

I still don't know why he left without saying anything.

Analyze

Here the question is part of a reflective statement rather than a direct question to the listener.
