Translation guide
A space where an artist creates work. In Japanese, the term depends on the type of art, the formality, and whether it's a personal workspace or a commercial/rental space.
A room or space where an individual artist paints, sculpts, or creates, typically in their home or a dedicated building.
The most common and natural word for an artist's personal studio, especially for painting or sculpture. Borrowed from French 'atelier'. Used for both professional and amateur spaces.
彼女は自宅のアトリエで絵を描いている。
She paints in her home art studio.
アトリエを借りて制作に集中する。
I rent an art studio to focus on my work.
Literally 'painting room'. More formal and somewhat literary. Often used for a dedicated painting studio, especially in traditional Japanese painting contexts.
その画家は広い画室で大作に取り組んでいる。
The painter is working on a large piece in his spacious art studio.
General word for 'workspace' or 'workplace'. Can be used for an artist's studio in casual conversation, but it's less specific than アトリエ.
仕事場が散らかってきたから片付けないと。
My art studio is getting messy, so I need to clean up.
Borrowed from English 'studio'. More commonly used for photography, music, or dance studios. For an art studio, アトリエ is preferred unless it's a multi-purpose creative space.
彼はスタジオで彫刻と写真の両方を制作している。
He creates both sculptures and photographs in his studio.
A space that is rented out to artists, or a commercial establishment where art is produced or taught.
Specifically a rental art studio. Common in urban areas where artists share or rent workspace.

A shared art studio or co-working space for artists.

Literally 'painting class'. Often used for a studio where art lessons are given, not just a workspace.

A studio within a school, university, or museum.
Used for a practical training room, such as an art studio in a school or university.

Also used for institutional studios, especially in art schools.

アトリエ is the standard word for an artist's workspace, especially for painting and sculpture. スタジオ is more common for photography, music, dance, or broadcasting. Using スタジオ for a painter's studio can sound slightly off unless it's a large, multi-purpose creative space.
画家のアトリエを訪ねた。
I visited the painter's art studio.
写真スタジオで撮影する。
We'll shoot at the photo studio.
芸術スタジオ (geijutsu sutajio) is not a natural expression. It sounds like a direct translation from English and is rarely used. Stick to アトリエ or 画室 depending on context.
