The space just below the roof of a house, often used for storage. In Japanese, this is typically called 屋根裏 (yaneura), but other terms exist depending on context.
屋根裏
attic (storage space)
The room or area directly beneath the roof, used for storing items.
The most common and general term for an attic. Literally 'behind/under the roof'.

Literally 'above the ceiling'. Often used interchangeably with 屋根裏, but emphasizes the space above the ceiling rather than directly under the roof. Common in houses with a flat ceiling.

Loanword from English 'loft'. Often refers to a small, open attic space used as a living area or storage, especially in modern or Western-style homes. Not a traditional Japanese attic.

Specifically an attic room, implying it is a habitable space rather than just storage. Less common than 屋根裏.

屋根裏 is the safest choice for 'attic' in everyday conversation. 天井裏 is also common but focuses on the space above the ceiling. In many Japanese houses, the attic is not a full room, so 屋根裏部屋 is less common unless it's a converted space.
ロフト in Japanese often refers to a raised sleeping or storage platform within a room, not necessarily a separate attic. Use 屋根裏 for a traditional attic.
