Can be used figuratively for 'awaken' to a new interest, passion, or awareness. Often used in compound nouns like 性に目覚める (awaken sexually).

Avoid directly translating 'awaken' as 覚醒する in everyday speech; it sounds overly dramatic or technical. Use 目が覚める or 起きる for sleep, and 気づく for awareness.
