How to express that a secret, wrongdoing, or hidden truth is discovered or exposed in Japanese.
The speaker's hidden act, lie, or secret is discovered by others, often with negative consequences.
Someone's real character, identity, or hidden ability is discovered, often unexpectedly.
Someone's skill or ability that was not obvious becomes recognized.
Passive of 見出す (to find out, discover). Often used for talent or potential being recognized.
彼の才能がコーチに見出された。
His talent was found out by the coach.
ばれる is specifically for secrets, lies, or wrongdoing being exposed, and carries a nuance of 'uh-oh, I'm caught'. 見つかる is more general 'to be found' and can be used for lost items, hidden objects, or even abstract things like mistakes. For 'my lie was found out', ばれる is much more natural than 見つかる.
嘘がばれた。
My lie was found out (and I'm in trouble).
なくした鍵が見つかった。
I found my lost keys. (Not 'found out' in the secret sense.)
Avoid translating 'be found out' literally as 見つけられる or 発見される for secrets. These sound unnatural. Use ばれる or 見つかる instead.
The most common and natural way to say a secret or lie is found out. Casual and widely used in daily conversation.
嘘がばれた。
My lie was found out.
浮気がばれて、大変なことになった。
My affair was found out, and it turned into a big mess.
Literally 'to be found'. Used when a hidden object or person is discovered, but also for secrets or wrongdoing. More neutral than ばれる.
隠していた日記が見つかった。
The diary I had hidden was found out.
不正が監査で見つかった。
The fraud was found out in the audit.
Formal/literary term for a secret or plot being exposed. Often used in historical or dramatic contexts.
陰謀が露見した。
The conspiracy was found out.
Also used for identity or true nature being exposed. Very versatile.
変装していたけど、声でばれた。
I was in disguise, but I was found out by my voice.
Specifically for true identity being exposed. 正体 means 'true identity'.
スパイの正体がばれた。
The spy's true identity was found out.
Passive of 知る (to know). Means 'to become known'. Neutral and can be used for secrets or hidden facts.
彼の過去がみんなに知られた。
His past was found out by everyone.
Literally 'excavated', used metaphorically for discovering hidden talent, like a scout finding a star.
彼女は若い頃に発掘された歌手だ。
She is a singer who was found out (discovered) when she was young.
